Motivation Didn't Change My Life

A decision did. This is the honest story of how I went from 369 pounds to around 189 pounds—and what I learned about discipline, setbacks, support, and continuing to move forward.

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “What motivated you to lose the weight?”

The truth is, motivation wasn't what changed my life.

Chapter 01

Where My Journey Began

At my heaviest, I weighed 369 pounds. Today, I am around 189 pounds. Losing nearly 180 pounds has been one of the hardest and most rewarding journeys of my life.

It wasn't easy. There were days I wanted to quit, days I didn't believe in myself, and days I felt completely alone.

In the beginning, I didn't always have the support system I needed. I had to make the decision to change before anyone else could make that decision for me.

Chapter 02

I Was Tired of Just Existing

For years, I struggled with everyday life. I was constantly tired. I spent too much time sitting on the couch, physical activity felt difficult, and food became a source of comfort.

My weight gain began when I was young. Around third or fourth grade, my family moved, I stopped spending as much time outside, and my weight continued to increase.

Through middle school and high school, I avoided physical activity whenever I could. By the time I reached my mid-thirties, I knew something had to change.

Chapter 03

My Family History Became a Wake-Up Call

Diabetes runs through my family. My mother struggled with diabetes, my father was pre-diabetic, and my grandparents experienced it as well.

I realized I was heading down the same road. I didn't want to spend the rest of my life struggling with my health or allowing my future to be determined by the habits I had built.

Like many people, I kept telling myself: “I'll start tomorrow.” “I'll start next week.” “I'll get everything ready first.”

Tomorrow kept getting pushed further away.

On my 36th birthday, I finally decided I wasn't going to keep living the same way.

Chapter 04

Progress Starts Small

My journey began with keto and a low-carbohydrate approach. I wasn't doing much exercise at first. I focused primarily on changing the way I ate.

As the weight began to come off, I joined Planet Fitness. Over time, I found a community of gym friends who shared similar goals.

Having people around me who encouraged healthier habits made a major difference. The people around you matter.

Chapter 05

I Still Struggle

People sometimes assume that once you lose weight, everything becomes easy. It doesn't.

I still struggle with my diet. I still have days when I don't want to work out. I still have moments when I overeat.

Recently, I bought a package of cookies believing I would only eat a couple. By the end of the day, I had eaten all 24.

Years ago, that might have convinced me I was a failure. Today, I forgive myself and move forward.

One difficult meal does not erase months of progress. One missed workout does not erase your commitment.

Chapter 06

Motivation Is Temporary

Many people wait until they feel motivated before they begin. The problem is that motivation comes and goes.

There are still days I don't want to go to the gym. There are days I want to stay in bed and do nothing.

But when I get up, move my body, and complete the workout, I usually feel better physically and mentally.

You do not always have to feel like doing it. Sometimes you simply have to take the next step anyway.

Chapter 07

Don't Let the Scale Tell Your Whole Story

The number on the scale is only one way to measure progress. You may be losing fat while gaining muscle. Your weight may stay the same even while your body is changing.

Celebrate the victories that don't appear on the scale.

Maybe walking up a flight of stairs is easier. Maybe tying your shoes doesn't leave you out of breath. Maybe you can walk for 15 minutes instead of 10.

Those victories matter.

Chapter 08

The Battle Is Mental

Even after losing nearly 180 pounds, I still struggle with body dysmorphia.

Some days, I look in the mirror and feel proud. Other days, I still see the 369-pound version of myself.

I see the loose skin, the stretch marks, and the physical reminders of where I have been.

Sometimes I wear those reminders like badges of honor. Other times, they challenge my confidence.

When those thoughts appear, I remind myself where I started and how far I have come.

Chapter 09

Your Life Can Change Too

Make the decision. Don't wait for motivation. Don't wait for Monday, next month, or the perfect time.

Your first step does not have to be huge.

Take a ten-minute walk. Drink more water. Cook one healthier meal. Go to the gym for twenty minutes.

Build confidence by keeping small promises to yourself. Small victories become habits. Habits become a lifestyle. A lifestyle can change your future.
